Arne Slot’s Liverpool have opened contract renewal talks with their defensive mainstay Ibrahima Konate.
According to a report from Football Insider, Liverpool are quite pleased with Ibrahima Konate’s performances and they are all set to reward the French centre-back with a new deal. They want to extend his stay at the club as he has managed to cement his place in Arne Slot’s long-term plans.
Konate arrived at the Merseyside club in the summer of 2021 and has grown in stature over the years. Things did take a drastic turn towards the end of last season as he started falling out of favour under Jurgen Klopp. The French centre-back didn’t really have an impressive pre-season and he started the season on the bench.
But, the 25-year-old has worked his way back into the starting XI. After being on the bench for their first fixture against Ipswich, Konate has started all their league games. He has formed a dependable partnership with Virgil van Dijk at the club and has been key to their impressive start.
Liverpool looking to offer Konate a new deal
While Arne Slot had his doubts about the former RB Leipzig defender, he has managed to win over the Dutch manager who now wants to secure the long-term future of his star centre-back. Konate’s current contract runs out in the summer of 2026.
The French defender will only have a year left on his deal next summer. As a result, the Reds are looking to extend the contract of their £70,000-a-week mainstay. Slot believes he will be a key part of their team in the years to come and with Van Dijk’s future uncertain, Konate could be the next leader of their defence.
The Merseyside club want to tie him down to a new deal. They are looking to reward him for his work with an improved contract offer and have already opened preliminary talks regarding a new deal. The Reds are confident that Konate will put pen to paper on a new deal. With the talks already underway, they will be hoping to get it done as soon as possible.
