Manchester City set aside £80 million for new signings in January

Manchester City on the verge of signing Matija Popovic.

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City have set aside £80 million to reinforce their squad when the transfer window reopens in January.

According to a report from Football Insider, Manchester City have some serious funds available to reinforce their squad in the winter transfer window. The Premier League giants can spend around £80 million to add more quality to an already world-class squad.

Manchester City did not really do much in the last summer transfer window. They already had all bases covered, and their squad hardly needed any reinforcement. The Premier League champions did sign Savinho, while Ilkay Gundogan returned to the club on a free transfer. After being quiet during the summer, Pep Guardiola’s team now have massive funds at their disposal to further strengthen their squad in January.

Manchester City sanctioned the departure of Julian Alvarez before the start of the 2024/25 season, and they still have the money from his sale. The Argentine international joined Atletico Madrid in a deal worth £81.5 million, and City have that available to use in the upcoming transfer window.

City could use the funds to sign a new number six

The Manchester-based club recently received a massive blow as Rodri picked up a serious knee injury. With the Spanish international expected to be out until the very end of the season, Manchester City have started to look for a potential replacement.

While the priority is to figure out a way to cope with his absence from the options that already exist in their squad, they are also looking at the market and do have the funds to spend. The Premier League champions do not really make big money moves during the winter. But if the right player is available, Guardiola’s team could go all out to bring him to the club.

As per reports, they have their eyes on Atalanta’s Ederson and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton. They have set aside £80 million which should be enough to bring either of them to Manchester. City could even look at other areas that need reinforcement depending on what happens until the turn of the calendar. If they manage to cope well without Rodri, the Citizens might not use the funds available.
