Liverpool keeping tabs on Clarens Culma Mejia

Liverpool are keeping tabs on 20-year-old Colombian defender Clarens Culma Mejia after Darwin Nunez’s recommendation.

According to Football Insider, Liverpool are closely watching Clarens Culma Mejia ahead of the January window following Darwin Nunez’s recommendation of the versatile 20-year-old South American defender. The Atletico Nacional star’s contract might be expiring soon, meaning the Merseysiders could be looking at a cheap deal for the Colombian.

Liverpool are reportedly keen to watch Clarens Culma Mejia rather closely following Darwin Nunez’s recommendation of the Colombian defender. The versatile 20-year-old would be an unknown quantity, but the club have decided to take notice after their striker was ‘wowed’ by this talent.

The report outlines that Mejia is a player who can play multiple positions in the backline, including in the left-back and centre-back roles. It does tick a few boxes for the kind of defender Liverpool might want, while there are suggestions that he would also be a cheaper signing as his contract might be close to expiring.

Either way, beyond this angle of Nunez recommending Meija, there are no credible sources to suggest Liverpool might actually be interested. The club could also be keen to make defensive signings ahead of January to sustain a title challenge and replace a possible long-serving player in their current squad.

Mejia is not a Virgil van Dijk replacement

There are mild suggestions that the pursuit of a player like Mejia would signal their intent to sign a player to replace Virgil van Dijk. The Dutchman’s contract situation is up in the air, but the versatile 20-year-old South American defender is certainly not the answer to replace the centre-back. Either way, Liverpool have some big links to players like Marc Guehi, and signing the Crystal Palace man would make more sense.

Similarly, Liverpool are exploring other names in the market, including the surprise option of Jarrad Branthwaite from arch-rivals Everton. Whether signing the Toffees star is a realistic idea remains the question, but it could certainly be something worth exploring. Overall, it would make sense for Liverpool to sign an established name rather than someone of Mejia’s profile, who, in truth, remains a mystery player.
