Everton eyeing Dario Essugo swoop

Everton will reportedly look to sign 19-year-old Portuguese midfield sensation Dario Essugo from Sporting CP next year.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Dario Essugo is the subject of interest from Everton. The Toffees are keen on bolstering their midfield department next year amid the advancing years of Idrissa Gueye. The 19-year-old UD Las Palmas midfield sensation, on loan from Sporting CP, has thus emerged as a target for the Merseyside outfit.

Who is Dario Essugo?

Dario Essugo has made a considerable impact since joining UD Las Palmas from Sporting CP on a season-long loan deal in the summer transfer window. A native of Lisbon, the teenage whizkid spent his formative years in Portugal, starting his youth career at UDR Santa Maria before joining Sporting CP in 2014.

The 19-year-old has gone from strength to strength in the past decade and broke into the first-team squad at Sporting CP in March 2021. Essugo also became the youngest-ever debutant in the UEFA Champions League in December 2021 after appearing as a second-half substitute aged 16 years and 268 days.

However, the Portuguese midfield sensation has yet to become a regular for Sporting CP, although he began the 2024/25 season with two substitute appearances. Nevertheless, the Leoes loaned Essugo to La Liga club UD Last Palmas on a season-long deal in the summer transfer window, and he has already racked up 234 minutes of game time.

Premier League move on the cards?

Dario Essugo’s progress at UD Las Palmas has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several well-known clubs across Europe. Everton might be on the prospective suitors for the teenage midfield sensation next year, with the Merseyside outfit closely monitoring his progress in La Liga with the Gran Canarian club.

Everton’s interest in Dario Essugo is understandable. The Toffees have been dreadful in the first few weeks of the 2024/25 season, only managing their first Premier League win this past weekend against Crystal Palace. While Everton’s midfield department is solid, Idrissa Gueye is approaching the twilight of his career.

The Toffees are keen on bringing the average age of their squad down, with Chris Rigg recently emerging as a target. As for Essugo, the 19-year-old Portuguese midfield sensation will return to Sporting CP after his loan move ends. So, Everton will have to deal with the Liga Portugal giants to land the youngster next year.
