Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United want to sign a replacement before sanctioning the departure of their star striker Callum Wilson.
Callum Wilson’s future has become a big talking point of late. With the English striker’s contract running out at the end of the season multiple reports suggest Newcastle are ready to sell him in January. But, according to a report from Football Insider, the Magpies want to sign a replacement before letting the former Bournemouth ace leave.
Wilson joined the Tyneside club from the Cherries back in the summer of 2020. The 32-year-old has been an important first-team player for Eddie Howe’s team over the years and he has an impressive track record for them.
While he racked up less than 1,000 minutes in his 20 Premier League appearances last season, the English international contributed towards 10 goals (9 goals, 1 assist). His numbers suggest that he still has what it takes to get it done at the highest level. But, his fitness has been a major concern of late.
Meanwhile, his contract situation has complicated his future. His deal at Newcastle runs out after the end of the season. As a result, multiple clubs are keeping a close eye on and are looking to strike a deal for a cut-price fee.
Newcastle want a replacement before selling Wilson
Fulham and Brentford are two Premier League clubs that are interested in the veteran striker. They are interested in betting on him despite his injury struggles. While it would make sense for the Magpies to sanction his departure, Eddie Howe is a big fan of Wilson and doesn’t really want to let him leave.
The Newcastle manager wants to have him around as his second choice behind Alexander Isak. With the Swedish international struggling to stay fit and Wilson having his own fitness concerns, the Magpies find themselves in a difficult situation.
They recently used Anthony Gordon as their number nine but that cannot be a long-term plan. As a result, they have decided that they won’t be selling Wilson unless they have a replacement in line. They hope to keep him at the club until the end of the season. But, will move to sign a new striker if interested clubs try to prise Wilson away during the winter window.
