Fabrizio Romano quashes Alex Baena links with Newcastle United

Villarreal attacking midfielder Alex Baena has reportedly been linked with a move to Newcastle United in recent weeks.

Fabrizio Romano has now quashed such speculations, and he has revealed to Caught Offside that Alex Baena is unlikely to be on the radar of Newcastle United in the coming windows.

The Italian journalist wrote, “Newcastle have also been linked with Alex Baena, but there’s nothing into it at the moment. My understanding is that it’s all quiet around Baena as Villarreal consider him a key player; Newcastle do a lot of scouting activity, so it’s normal for them to follow players around the world but nothing concrete or advanced into this one.”

The Spanish midfielder has done quite well for La Liga club Villarreal, and there is no doubt that he could be an exciting addition to the Newcastle United midfield as well. The Magpies could certainly use more creativity and technical ability from the central areas. The 23-year-old has the flair to operate as the central attacking midfielder as well as a winger.

The Spaniard would have added some much-needed unpredictability to the Newcastle United attack as well. Furthermore, his arrival would have helped Newcastle create more goal-scoring opportunities. It will be interesting to see if Newcastle decide to make a move for someone like him in the near future.

Baena would be a superb addition

Alex Baena has been linked with other Premier League clubs as well, and it remains to be seen where he ends up. The 23-year-old is a top-class player who has the physical and technical attributes to do well in the Premier League. He could be an important player for most top-half clubs.

The opportunity to join a Premier League club could be quite exciting for the 23-year-old, and he will be looking to prove himself in English football if a potential move goes through in future.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United will have to improve their attacking unit if they are serious about challenging for trophies regularly. They have been overly dependent on Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak for goals and creativity. The Tyneside outfit need more cutting edge in the final third, and they should look to bring in a creative midfielder and another reliable winger.
