Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal are not yet certain about handing their midfield mainstay Thomas Partey a new deal.
Thomas Partey’s future is a big talking point with his contract running out at the end of the season. The Ghana international is back at his best but according to a report from The Mirror, Arsenal are not yet certain about handing him a new deal.
Partey made a name for himself at Atletico Madrid before making the move to the North London club towards the end of 2020. He has been an integral part of their first team throughout. But, his future at the club is uncertain with his contract running out.
The 31-year-old is all set to be a free agent next summer and he will be free to negotiate a Bosman move with any foreign club at the start of next year. While things could get complicated if the Gunners do not extend his stay before the end of the year, they are not yet certain about offering him a new contract.
Arsenal undecided about handing Partey a new deal
He currently earns in excess of £200,000 per week at the Emirates and his departure could be a massive boost for their wage bill. It could help them bring in a replacement without much difficulty. But, to replace someone with his experience and understanding of Arteta’s system won’t be that easy a task.
More importantly, the 31-year-old has revived himself in the ongoing season. The defensive midfielder has been involved in seven matches so far this season and has been amongst their best players. While he has had his share of injury struggles and was on the sidelines for the majority of last season, Partey has proved his fitness so far this season.
He still has quite a few years left in him and the Gunners surely have a decision to make with regards to handing him a new deal. Since he is amongst their top earners and he has struggled to stay fit of late, it is quite understandable that the Gunners are undecided about handing him another lucrative long-term deal.
Irrespective of what happens with the 31-year-old midfielder’s future, one thing is certain, the North London club will be pushing to sign a new defensive midfielder next summer.
