Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon has been linked with a move away from the Tyneside club in recent months.
Liverpool were keen on signing Anthony Gordon during the summer transfer window. However, Newcastle United managed to hold onto their 23-year-old attacking mainstay.
According to a report by Daily Mirror, the Englishman is now closing in on signing a new deal with the club. Arsenal were keen on the player earlier this summer as well, and the development will certainly come as a major blow for Arsenal and Liverpool.
Newcastle United will be under no pressure to sell Gordon during the summer transfer window in 2025 if he decides to commit his long-term future to the club. It seems that Arsenal and Liverpool might have to look at other options now after showing interest in him.
Arsenal and Liverpool could use Gordon
Both clubs will need to sign a quality winger in the coming months. Arsenal have not been able to rotate players like Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli adequately due to the lack of depth in the side. Gordon would have been an exceptional acquisition for the North London outfit.
The 23-year-old has proven himself to be one of the best wingers in the Premier League since his move to Newcastle United, and he has established himself as an indispensable asset for them. The Englishman would have been a quality long-term acquisition for Arsenal, and he could have transformed them in the attack.
Gordon is capable of scoring goals consistently and opening up goalscoring opportunities for his teammates with pace and trickery. Meanwhile, Liverpool need more quality and depth in the wide areas as well. Egyptian international Mohamed Salah will be out of contract in the summer of 2025, and he will need to be replaced.
Salah has not signed an extension with Liverpool yet, and he will be able to secure a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs when the transfer window opens in January. Liverpool must start planning for a future without him, and Gordon would be an exceptional acquisition.
The boyhood Liverpool fan could be tempted to join them, and it remains to be seen how the situation develops. Signing a new deal with Newcastle United will certainly make it difficult for any club to sign him.
