Chelsea weigh up Michael Kayode swoop

Premier League heavyweights Chelsea are considering a winter move for 20-year-old Fiorentina full-back Michael Kayode, a long-term target for Tottenham Hotspur.

According to a report by Graeme Bailey on TBR Football, Michael Kayode is the subject of interest from Chelsea. The Blues want to dip their toes in the market for a right-back in the January transfer window. So, they have set their sights on the Fiorentina full-back, although the 20-year-old is also a long-term target for Tottenham Hotspur.

The rapid rise of Michael Kayode

Michael Kayode has established himself as one of the best young full-backs in Serie A since breaking into the first-team squad at Fiorentina. A native of Borgomanero, he spent his formative years with three Italian clubs, passing through the academies at Juventus and ASDC Gozzano before graduating from the youth division at Fiorentina.

The 20-year-old made his first-team bow for Fiorentina at the onset of the 2023/24 season and has been a regular for La Viola since then. Kayode has turned out 40 times thus far for the Serie A club while chipping in with one goal and four assists.

Meanwhile, Michael Kayode’s progress at Fiorentina has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs across Europe. Fiorentina rejected multiple offers, including from Tottenham Hotspur, for the Italian full-back in the summer transfer window. However, they might receive more bids this coming winter, with Chelsea among his prospective suitors.

London calling?

Tottenham Hotspur’s interest in Michael Kayode is understandable. The North London club sold Emerson Royal in the summer transfer window, while Djed Spence’s long-term future at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is uncertain. So, the Fiorentina whizkid is a viable target for the Premier League heavyweights.

As for Chelsea, the Blues want to delve into the market for a right-back in the January transfer window. With Reece James still struggling with fitness issues, Malo Gusto is the only recognised right-back in Enzo Maresca’s squad. So, Chelsea will look to sign a right-back in the coming months, with Kayode an option worth considering.

However, others, like Jules Kounde and Kiliann Sildillia, also feature on Chelsea’s wishlist. So, it will be interesting to see who becomes the top right-back target for the West London club heading into the January transfer window.
