Inter Milan have taken the initial steps towards striking a pre-agreement with Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk in January.
According to Givemesport via Interlive, Inter Milan have made moves to sign Liverpool defensive mainstay Virgil van Dijk. The Italian giants are looking to reach a pre-agreement with the Dutch international in the upcoming winter transfer window regarding a free transfer in the summer of 2025.
Van Dijk made a name for himself at Southampton. He then secured a big-money move to Liverpool in the winter of 2018 and hasn’t looked back since. Not only did the 33-year-old establish himself as one of the mainstays of the Merseyside club under Jurgen Klopp, he played a massive part in all the success they had during the German manager’s reign.
Klopp parted ways with the club after the end of the 2023/24 season and his most expensive signing Van Dijk could soon leave Anfield. The Dutch defender is still one of the first names on their team sheet under Arne Slot and the manager is keen on having him around for years to come.
But, his long-term future is uncertain with his contract running out at the end of the season. While the Reds will try everything in their power to renew his deal, Van Dijk will have the final say and he could opt for a new challenge away from the English club.
Inter Milan pushing to sign Van Dijk for free
With his contract expiring in less than 10 months, Inter Milan are excited by the possibility of signing one of the best defenders in the world for free. The Italian outfit are known for their ability to lure free agents to the club and they seem keen on bringing Van Dijk to San Siro.
Their president Beppe Marotta is a massive fan of the 33-year-old and he has already enquired about the availability of the veteran centre-back. He has tested the waters as Inter look to reach an agreement with the player during the winter break.
Since Liverpool haven’t managed to extend his stay yet, there is a real possibility of Inter striking a pre-agreement when the window reopens in January. But, they still have a massive roadblock as the player currently earns a whopping €13.5 million a season. At 33, he will surely accept a pay cut but Inter will still have to table a decent offer in the winter to lure him to the Serie A.
