Inter Milan could return in the pursuit of Jakub Kiwior in January as there are situations at the San Siro that will see them chase a centre-back.
According to Inter-Live, Jakub Kiwior could re-emerge on Inter Milan’s radar around the January window as the club will attempt to bring in a new defender. Some mitigating factors could push the Serie A champions towards the €25 million Arsenal defender, who may not have a place in Mikel Arteta’s plans in the future.
Inter Milan to rekindle Jakub Kiwior’s pursuit?
Jakub Kiwior is by no means a below-par player, and he proved his worth in an Arsenal shirt when he started a series of games since the turn of the year. The inconsistent problems with Oleksandr Zinchenko in terms of form and injuries allowed Mikel Arteta to hand the Polish defender a concerted run, and he did not disappoint.
However, since the summer window opened, Arsenal have seen the return of Jurrien Timber, who has started three of their four Premier League games at left-back so far. Centrally, Kiwior is considered, at best, a deputy to William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes. However, the arrival of Riccardo Calafiori cast significant doubts on his immediate future.
Kiwior had at least four Serie A sides keen, including Inter Milan, as the Italian champions are now thinking about rekindling their interest in January. Simone Inzaghi wanted a new defender in the summer and could not get his primary targets, which included the Polish star. However, there are doubts about Stefan de Vrig’s future, which could see the Dutchman leave in January, thus opening the door for a Kiwior-type signing.
Arsenal, who paid €25 million to sign Kiwior 18 months ago, would be willing to consider offers if it suits their valuation. Inter Milan are reportedly considering a loan approach, something that will not sit well with the Gunners hierarchy. Should they come up with a proper bid for a permanent transfer, the north Londoners will indeed consider it.
Why did Arsenal keep Kiwior in the summer?
It’s a baffling question, considering Kiwior had interest from Premier League sides such as Crystal Palace, among others. He might have also considered a return to Serie A, as this is a league he prefers from the Sporting and lifestyle point of view. Moreover, the many left-backs and left-sided defenders within Arsenal’s ranks do make him redundant here, as he has yet to be used in any of the games so far.
Arsenal decided against selling Kiwior as they were a bit concerned about Takehiro Tomiyasu’s long-term fitness as he suffered another injury before pre-season. Should the Japanese international show promising signs between now and January, the Polish star could leave in the winter window, with the likes of Inter Milan waiting in the wings.
