Manchester United, Tottenham enquired about Fermin Lopez this summer

Manchester United and Tottenham failed with enquiries for Fermin Lopez, as there was no chance of the midfielder leaving Barcelona.

According to Football-Espana, Barcelona and Fermin Lopez, he turned down enquiries from Manchester United and Tottenham during the summer. The Euro winner and Olympic Gold Medalist is considered a big part of the club’s future, and while he may have had tempting prospects to join an English side, the intention was never to leave Catalonia.

Manchester United Tottenham failed with Fermin Lopez’s enquiries

Fermin Lopez has shown promising signs that he’s the next big thing to come out of the Barcelona youth system. He was steadily establishing himself as a crucial part of Hansi Flick’s first team this season before an injury curtailed his run, although he will continue to fight for a place when he returns.

Lopez had a monumental summer in 2024, as he was part of the Spanish side that won the Euros and the Gold Medal at the Olympics. With Luis De la Fuente’s side, he played only one game, and that too only 28 minutes in a group match, although at the Olympics, he was on fire, scoring six goals in as many games and returning with the top prize.

Naturally there was interest in the 21-year-old Barcelona prospect over in the summer, with Manchester United reportedly failing with a bid. The Red Devils were on the lookout for exciting talents for the right price and wanted to test the Catalans’ resolve with a decent offer.

Tottenham may have enquired about the 21-year-old Barcelona prospect as well, with the club also looking at young stars to add to their project. Spurs eventually signed Archie Gray in a massive deal from Leeds United and saw enquiries for Lopez turned down by the player as well as Barcelona.

Lopez did not want to leave Barcelona

Barcelona’s financial situation gave rise to multiple rumours about the club’s willingness to sell some of their promising stars. Naturally, players like Gavi and Pedri were out of bounds in that regard, although there were a few like Lopez who were considered expendable.

Even with the reported enquiries from Manchester United and Tottenham, neither the club nor the player had any interest in moving away. In fact, the Catalans consider Lopez as a big part of their immediate future and remain keen to developing him into the top star who would flourish and be a part of this young team for years to come.
