Tottenham set to initiate contract talks with Cristian Romero

Premier League heavyweights Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly ready to open talks with Cristian Romero over a new contract amid his links with Real Madrid.

According to a report by Graeme Bailey on TBR Football, Cristian Romero is the subject of interest from Real Madrid. However, Tottenham will look to tie him to a new contract as they look to secure his long-term future and keep the reigning La Liga champions at bay. The discussions with the Argentine defender should begin before Christmas.

Cristian Romero and his Tottenham journey

Cristian Romero has been a revelation since joining Tottenham Hotspur from Atalanta. The North London club initially signed the South American centre-back on a loan deal in August 2021 before completing a permanent move worth £40 million 12 months later.

The 26-year-old has been a mainstay at the back for Tottenham in the last three years. Romero has turned out over 100 times thus far for the North London club while chipping in with seven goals and one assist. In addition, he has enjoyed success with his national side, winning the 2022 FIFA World Cup and the last two Copa America editions with Argentina.

Meanwhile, Cristian Romero’s exploits for his club and country have not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs across Europe. Recent reports have claimed that Real Madrid, Manchester United, and Paris Saint-Germain failed with summer approaches for the Argentine international. Meanwhile, the Merengues retain their interest in the Tottenham defender.

Real Madrid keen on Romero

Real Madrid’s continued interest in Cristian Romero is understandable. The reigning La Liga champions constantly strive to facilitate smooth transitions from one generation to the next. So, with David Alaba and Antonio Rudiger on the wrong side of 30, Real Madrid should sign a younger central defender.

Romero has thus emerged as a viable target for Real Madrid. However, convincing Tottenham to sell the 26-year-old defensive mainstay will be a tall order, especially considering the North London giants want to open talks with him over a new contract before Christmas.

With Tottenham pushing hard to keep hold of Romero and secure his long-term future at the club, a move to Real Madrid will unlikely see the light of day. However, it will be interesting to see how talks between the two parties progress.
