Michael Edwards spearheading Liverpool midfield search

Liverpool are reportedly keen on improving their midfield unit, and they will look to dip into the transfer market when it reopens in January.

According to a report from Football Insider, Liverpool executive Michael Edwards is personally spearheading the club’s search for a defensive midfielder. It remains to be seen whether they can find a suitable option to reinforce the squad midway through the season.

Liverpool are in desperate need of a quality defensive midfielder, and it remains to be seen whether they can find a quality addition in January. They tried to sign Martin Zubimendi during the summer transfer window, but the Spanish international midfielder turned down the opportunity to join them.

He wanted to continue at his boyhood club Real Sociedad in La Liga. Liverpool will now have to look at other alternatives, although Zubimendi reportedly remains on their radar. Although they have Wataru Endo at their disposal, they need to bring in better players if they want to challenge for major trophies.

The Japanese international midfielder has done quite well since joining Liverpool. But he is more suited to the role of a back up player instead of a regular starter. Liverpool have missed an elite defensive midfielder since the departure of Fabinho, and they need to plug that gap in the side quickly.

Liverpool need a quality defensive midfielder

With Michael Edwards personally involved in the search for a quality defensive midfielder, a solution can be expected soon. He was outstanding for Liverpool during his previous tenure at the club, and he will look to make a similar impact this time around as well.

Liverpool have put together a formidable squad and if they can plug a couple of weaknesses in the side, they could win major trophies. Signing a defensive midfielder and a reliable finisher could take them to a whole new level.

A quality defensive midfielder will not only help shield the back four, he will also allow the creative players at Liverpool to operate with more freedom. On the other hand, a reliable finisher will help them put away chances with consistency. Darwin Nunez has not been able to do that despite having an impressive overall footballing acumen.
