La Liga heavyweights Barcelona are reportedly considering a 2025 move for 29-year-old Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka.
According to a report by Spanish outlet SPORT, Leon Goretzka is the subject of interest from FC Barcelona. The Catalan giants remain in the market for a midfield reinforcement heading into the two transfer windows in 2025. The 29-year-old Bayern Munich midfielder has thus emerged as a target for the Blaugrana.
Leon Goretzka and his journey so far
Leon Goretzka has endured a topsy-turvy ride since joining Bayern Munich from FC Schalke in July 2018. A native of Bochum, he spent his formative years in his hometown, including more than a decade at VfL Bochum. However, he rose in prominence during his spell with Schalke, and the club’s fans were not happy when he moved to Bayern Munich.
The 29-year-old has enjoyed tremendous success during his spell with Bayern Munich, winning multiple Bundesliga titles and the treble in the 2019/20 season. Goretzka has turned out 222 times thus far for the Bavarian giants while chipping in with 40 goals and 46 assists.
However, the German international is no longer a regular for his club and country, managing only one minute of game time thus far this term. Meanwhile, Goretzka will enter the final 18 months of his contract when the year turns, with the situation capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs across Europe, including Barcelona.
Barcelona beckons?
Barcelona’s interest in Leon Goretzka is understandable. The Catalan giants remain in the market for a midfield reinforcement after failing to fill Sergio Busquets’s void in the summer transfer window. In addition, Oriol Romeu and Ilkay Gundogan left Barcelona, with the club only bringing in one midfielder to replace them.
So, with the Blaugrana struggling for options in the middle of the park, they can do with a versatile midfielder capable of reprising the holding midfield role and playing as a box-to-box midfielder. Goretzka ticks all the boxes, making him an appealing target for Barcelona, although his teammate Joshua Kimmich is also an option for the club.
In addition, Fabian Ruiz is a target for Barcelona. However, Flick might prefer a move for Goretzka, who played his best football under the tutelage of the Barcelona manager. So, the Catalan giants have several options on their wishlist, and it will be interesting to see who reinforces the midfield department at the club next year.
