La Liga champions Real Madrid have reportedly set a fee limit to sign 26-year-old Argentine defender Cristian Romero, valued at €60 million at Tottenham Hotspur.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Defensa Central, Cristian Romero is the subject of interest from Real Madrid. The reigning La Liga champions want to bolster their backline in the 2025 summer transfer window. However, they do not want to meet Tottenham’s asking price of €60 million, setting a fee limit of €40 million.
Cristian Romero and his rise at Tottenham
Cristian Romero has been one of the best defenders in the Premier League since joining Tottenham Hotspur from Atalanta. The South American defender arrived in England with a big reputation after his successful spell with La Dea, although Tottenham initially signed him on a loan deal before completing a permanent transfer in August 2022.
The 26-year-old has been a mainstay at the back for Tottenham throughout his spell at the North London club. Romero has turned out over 100 times thus far for the Premier League club while chipping in with seven goals and one assist. In addition, he has enjoyed success in international football, winning the 2022 FIFA World Cup and the last two Copa America editions with Argentina.
Meanwhile, Cristian Romero’s progress at Tottenham has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs across Europe. Recent reports have claimed that Real Madrid, Manchester United, and Paris Saint-Germain failed with their approaches in the summer transfer window. The Argentine international remains a target for Real Madrid.
Real Madrid remain interested in Romero
Real Madrid’s interest in Cristian Romero is understandable. The reigning La Liga champions want to bolster their backline in the 2025 summer transfer window, with Antonio Rudiger and David Alaba on the wrong side of 30. In addition, they have lost Nacho as a free agent, with the former Real Madrid captain moving to Saudi Arabia.
So, Romero is a viable target for Real Madrid, as he can be a long-term central defensive partner for Eder Militao. Meanwhile, Tottenham will demand around €60 million to part ways with the Argentine defender. However, the Merengues do not want to meet Tottenham’s valuation and have set a fee limit of €40 million.
Considering Romero’s stature and the fact that his contract runs out in June 2027, €40 million might not be enough to secure the services of the Tottenham defensive mainstay. So, it will be interesting to see how this story progresses, especially if the North London giants insist on recouping €60 million from his sale.
