Newcastle United have made Angel Gomes their top target ahead of the January window, with the club planning a cut-price move for the midfielder.
According to The Sun, Newcastle United are intent on bringing Angel Gomes back to England as they plot a January move for the new England international. The LOSC Lille star does have further interest from the likes of Tottenham and Liverpool, although the Magpies could make their first move for the midfielder.
Newcastle United to prioritise Angel Gomes move
A few weeks ago, not many Premier League fans would have heard the name, Angel Gomes, barring, of course, Manchester United, who had the midfielder on the books until a few years ago. The 24-year-old has seen an exponential rise in stature since leaving the Red Devils for an adventure in France.
The 24-year-old has been on the books of LOSC Lille, becoming a key star for the Ligue 1 side over the last three years. Les Dogues are eager to keep hold of him, but with less than a year left on his current deal, Gomes is leaning towards leaving on a free transfer next summer.
Naturally, his call-up to the England squad and subsequent debut have resulted in a host of clubs keeping tabs. Tottenham are interested in Angel Gomes, as the midfielder’s profile might suit Ange Postecoglou’s style. Liverpool are also monitoring his situation, although he is not a player they are desperate for in their squad. His cost-effective arrival will certainly have the Merseysiders interested.
Newcastle United are looking to jump ahead of the queue as they are willing to make a move in January. The Magpies are open to paying a decent fee in the winter window to get the midfielder early rather than be a part of the pack that chases a free agent next summer. For Gomes, a return to England will be appealing, and he could green-light a January move should a credible offer arrive on Lille’s doors.
Gomes could suit Newcastle United
Eddie Howe wants to add depth to the squad ahead of the January window, as Newcastle United did have an underwhelming market in the summer. Meanwhile, they are also looking to curtail their finances, and the 24-year-old will be seen as an opportunistic signing ahead of the winter months.
Tottenham and Liverpool will want to sign a player who could become a fixture in the England side. Hence, the Magpies will face plenty of competition, meaning a move in January would make more sense for them than angling a free transfer in the summer.
