Liverpool were Anthony Gordon more than Arsenal during the summer, as Newcastle United eventually kept hold of the winger.
According to Fabrizio Romano on Caught Offside, Liverpool held a concrete interest in Anthony Gordon during the summer, even more than Arsenal. The two clubs had links to the winger at different timelines during the summer, as Newcastle United managed to keep hold of the England international.
Liverpool’s interest in Gordon was stronger than Arsenal’s
In an ideal scenario, two Premier League giants, Liverpool and Arsenal, might have battled it out for England international Anthony Gordon. The Newcastle United winger was a high-quality target for either side at different periods of the summer window, but neither managed to get him on board.
Arsenal were interested late in the window, although they never made a realistic move for the winger despite needing a wide attacker to fill a void in their attacking setup. The Gunners ended up signing Raheem Sterling in a cost-effective loan deal from Chelsea, although they could open the door to signing Gordon next summer when his terms will be far more ideal.
As per Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal were never going to spend massive sums on a new winger when, realistically, they only needed a backup for Bukayo Saka. He then insisted that Liverpool’s interest was real and that the Merseysiders were pushing harder at one stage before backing away. As per other reports, Gordon was ready to go for a move, which would have angered several Newcastle United fans.
Romano said, “Liverpool were the club in talks to sign Gordon in June. I don’t have any concrete info on Arsenal also because they never really planned to spend crazy money on a winger this summer. Liverpool wanted him in June, but then he was too expensive,”
Newcastle United were confident that Gordon would be kept at the club despite the heavy speculation surrounding his future. Liverpool, in particular, were eager to bring the England international to his boyhood club and could have another go next summer, as a January move for such a high-profile player will be all but impossible.
Newcastle United will want a new contract for Gordon
Gordon will enter the final year of his deal next summer, which will put Newcastle United in a precarious position. The Magpies will have no choice but to sell him for a price lower than their valuation, meaning it will be in their interest to get a new deal on the table.
The Magpies are prepared to intensify their efforts with Gordon over a new deal, although much will depend on what the player wants next. At this moment, a move to Liverpool or even Arsenal will be seen as an upgrade by Gordon, which could even sway his decision not to extend his stay at St James Park.
