Chelsea working on finding David Datro Fofana solution after AEK Athens move collapses

Premier League heavyweights Chelsea are reportedly desperately looking for a solution for David Datro Fofana, whose move to AEK Athens has collapsed.

According to an update by reputed Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, David Datro Fofana is in limbo after his move to AEK Athens collapsed before Wednesday’s summer transfer deadline in Greece. So, with the 21-year-old misfit still at Chelsea, the Blues are working to find a solution for him, as he is not in Enzo Maresca’s plans for the 2024/25 season.

David Datro Fofana and his frustrating Chelsea stint

David Datro Fofana has endured a frustrating spell since joining Chelsea from Molde FK in January 2023. The Ivorian striker arrived at Stamford Bridge 18 months ago amid hype surrounding him, with many pundits likening him to Didier Drogba. However, he has never had any opportunity to prove his credentials.

The 21-year-old has barely featured for the West London club, managing only 113 minutes of game time across four appearances thus far for Chelsea. Fofana spent the 2023/24 season on loan at Union Berlin and Burnley but could not stamp his authority at either club.

Things have gone from bad to worse in the last few weeks after Enzo Maresca revealed that the Ivory Coast international was not in his plans. The Blues have already told Fofana to depart from Stamford Bridge this summer. And AEK Athens seemed to be the escape route for the highly-rated striker.

AEK Athens move collapses

The last few days have presented contradictory reports linking David Datro Fofana and AEK Athens. The Greek outfit first showed interest in the youngster in the early days of September. However, talks between AEK Athens and Chelsea were never smooth, with the West London club also turning down a bid.

The two clubs seemingly sealed the agreement regarding a loan-to-buy move for Fofana on Wednesday. However, the move has collapsed, with the 21-year-old Ivory Coast international in limbo over his future, with Chelsea working to find a solution.

The summer transfer window is still open in Turkiye, with Friday being the deadline day in the country. However, it is unclear if any Turkish club will launch the offensive to secure David Datro Fofana’s services in the coming hours and end his Chelsea nightmare.
