Manchester United, Real Madrid, and PSG were keen on signing Cristian Romero in the summer transfer window but could not convince Tottenham to sell the 26-year-old.
According to a report by TyC Sports, Cristian Romero was popular in the market in the summer transfer window. Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Paris Saint-Germain were keen on signing the Tottenham Hotspur defensive mainstay. However, their enquiries did not yield anything, with the North London club not interested in parting ways with the 26-year-old.
Cristian Romero and his Tottenham journey so far
Cristian Romero has established himself as one of the best defenders in the Premier League since joining Tottenham Hotspur from Atalanta. The Argentine international initially completed a loan move to the North London club in August 2021 before sealing a permanent deal worth €50 million 12 months later.
The 26-year-old has been a mainstay at the back for Tottenham throughout his stint with Tottenham, turning out over 100 times thus far for the Premier League heavyweights while chipping in with seven goals and one assist. Meanwhile, Romero’s progress at Tottenham has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs across Europe.
Widespread reports have heavily linked the Argentine international with Real Madrid in the last 12 months. However, a move has never materialised, although Los Blancos attempted to sign him in the summer transfer window. In addition, Romero was a target for Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain.
A man in demand
Real Madrid’s interest in Cristian Romero is understandable. The reigning La Liga champions prefer to facilitate smooth transitions from one generation to the next. So, with Antonio Rudiger and David Alaba on the wrong side of 30, the Tottenham defender is a viable target. While Real Madrid failed with a summer approach, they will likely return with a bid next year.
As for Manchester United, the Red Devils might have mulled over securing Cristian Romero’s services before sealing the deal to sign Matthijs de Ligt. However, with de Light and Leny Yoro arriving at Old Trafford, Manchester United do not need another centre-back.
Meanwhile, the 26-year-old Tottenham defender was also a target for Paris Saint-Germain, although the Ligue 1 champions also failed with their enquiry. However, Romero is reportedly happy at Tottenham, meaning a 2025 move might not see the light of day if his suitors return with bids.
