Lucas Digne could sign new Aston Villa contract

French full-back Lucas Digne could pen down a new deal with Unai Emery’s Aston Villa to extend his stay beyond 2026.

According to a report from L’Équipe, Lucas Digne could commit his future to Aston Villa by signing a new deal with the Premier League outfit. His impressive work for Unai Emery’s team have helped him regain his spot in the French national team and it could now lead to a new contract at Villa.

Things might not have worked out for Digne at Barcelona but the move to Everton helped him establish himself as one of the best full-backs in the Premier League. On the back of his consistent performances for the Toffees, he secured a move to Villa in the winter of 2022.

Lucas Digne’s revival at Aston Villa

He has gone from strength to strength since joining Emery’s team. Last season, the 31-year-old was involved in 46 matches and he contributed towards eight goals. The French full-back has revived himself under the Spanish manager and his consistent performances have helped him make a comeback on the international stage.

Digne was not a part of the French squad for the September international break but an injury to Real Madrid’s Ferland Mendy has once again opened the doors for the former Barcelona defender.

Digne could sign a new deal at Villa

He was not considered for the 2022 FIFA World Cup as well as the 2024 European Championship. While the Villa full-back thought his time with the national team was over, his performances for Villa over the last 12 months have given him an opportunity to once again cement his spot in the national team.

His game has further improved under Emery and the national call-up could now tempt him to commit his long-term future to the English club. His current contract runs out in 2026 and he was linked with a move away from the club during the summer. But, the report suggests the 31-year-old could be tempted to sign a new deal in the coming days.

If Digne manages to make the most out of the national call-up and cements his place in the French squad, it could convince him to pen down a new deal at Villa, as the club have helped him realise his dream of playing for Les Bleus once again.
