Mateo Kovacic is ready to part ways with Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City following the return of Ilkay Gundogan.
According to a report from Football Insider, Mateo Kovacic is considering his future at Manchester City. The Croatian midfielder is unsure about how much game time he will get at the Manchester-based club following the return of Ilkay Gundogan and is ready to part ways with them.
Kovacic joined Pep Guardiola’s team in 2023 and he was a regular feature for them in his debut campaign. He was involved in as many as 46 games and was used in different roles by the Spanish manager. The 30-year-old has started all of their Premier League fixtures so far this season.
But, his future is uncertain despite him having three years left on his deal. The return of former City skipper Ilkay Gundogan has raised a lot of questions about his future at the club. Kovacic might go down the pecking order and he might not rack up enough minutes in the 2024/25 season.
If the player does end up parting ways with the English giants, he could secure a move to the Middle East in the January transfer window. Saudi Pro League clubs are ready to offer him a lucrative deal in an attempt to lure him to the club.
Guardiola won’t be keen on selling Kovacic in the winter
While Guardiola doesn’t tend to stand in the way of players who want to leave, he won’t want to weaken his squad mid-way through the season and won’t be willing to let him leave the club. Gundogan’s return could have a massive impact on his future.
The former Barcelona star might be in the final phase of his career but he could once again take up an important role under the Spanish boss and it could significantly reduce Kovacic’s game time. As a result, it will be interesting to see if the former Real Madrid star doesn’t end up pushing for a move away as he does seem to be ready to leave the club.
