Arne Slot’s Liverpool are considering making a move for the services of Bayer Leverkusen defensive mainstay Jonathan Tah.

According to Christian Falk via CaughtOffside, Liverpool are interested in the services of Jonathan Tah. The Bayer Leverkusen centre-back has been on their radar for some time now and the Reds could knock on the German club’s door for his services as they look to prepare for the long run.

Tah made the move to Leverkusen back in 2015 from Hamburger SV and he hasn’t looked back since. The 28-year-old has gone from strength to strength over the years and has been one of their mainstays of late.

He played a big part in their incredible unbeaten run in the Bundesliga last season as they ended Bayern Munich’s dominance and won the league title. Overall, he was involved in 48 matches and even contributed towards seven goals for Xabi Alonso’s team.

Tah remains an integral part of their first team setup but his long-term future isn’t certain. While he will continue with the German club for the 2024/25 season, he might not be around for the next season as his contract runs out in less than 12 months.

Liverpool are keen on signing Tah

The German international could be available for free after the end of the season and multiple top clubs are keeping a close eye on him. Liverpool are one of the clubs keen on signing Tah as they look to prepare for life without Virgil van Dijk.

While talking about the German defender’s future, Christian Falk wrote in his CaughtOffside column: “But there’s another outfit to keep an eye on – Liverpool. In the far-flung future, they will need a successor for Virgil van Dijk. Jonathan Tah could be that for Liverpool. They are also on the table at this time,”

“I think the big advantage for Liverpool in the race for Tah is that the Premier League was always his big, big dream.

“There will always be rumours linking him with a move to Newcastle. However, if Liverpool were to knock on his door, there’s perhaps a big chance that he’ll be playing in the Premier League next season.”

Tah could succeed Van Dijk at Liverpool

Van Dijk has done wonders for the Merseyside club since joining them back in 2018. The Dutch international has been key to all the success they have had in recent seasons. But, the 33-year-old might not be around for long with his contract running out in 2025.

The Reds need to prepare for life without the former Southampton centre-back and they feel Tah could help replace him in the long run. While it won’t be easy to fill in for Van Dijk, the German centre-back has the experience and more importantly, he is keen on playing in the Premier League which could work in Liverpool’s favour.

He was a top target for Bayern Munich during the summer but they were unable to meet the demands of Leverkusen who wanted €30 million (€25 million plus €5 million in add-ons) for the 28-year-old. While Alonso’s team will look to extend his stay, the player’s desire could help Liverpool secure a free transfer.
