Federico Chiesa was reportedly offered to Aston Villa, who could not proceed after reaching their threshold with PSR.
According to Football Insider, Aston Villa may have bowed out of the race to sign Federico Chiesa after the winger was offered to them. Liverpool eventually signed the former Juventus attacker in a low-cost deal, with Villa reportedly missing out on having reached their threshold with PSR.
Aston Villa passed up Federico Chiesa
Unai Emery will be pleased with the level of business Aston Villa did in the transfer window. But he might have wanted a bit more to be done. For instance, the Spanish boss wanted a new attacker in place, as he felt the numbers in those areas were a bit short.
There were some links to a few wide attackers during and at the latter stages of the window, with Barcelona’s Raphinha a big target, as per many reports. A deal for the Brazilian might have become a possibility had the Catalans managed to bring top target Nico Williams, which never came through.
Beyond that, Federico Chiesa was reportedly offered to Aston Villa, among other sides. The Italian allegedly rejected a lot of overtures before sealing his transfer to Liverpool in the last period of the window.
Liverpool signed the winger for a meagre £10 million fee with a small amount pending in the way of bonuses, and considering the many interested clubs, the Merseysiders got a fantastic deal for a versatile attacker. As for Aston Villa, they might have been keen, but due to the PSR threshold, they could not put forward an offer to get the winger to the club.
Aston Villa reached PSR limits
Aston Villa had to find ways to manoeuvre through their PSR-imposed problems in the early part of the summer window. The club conducted a few big sales to come in line with their financial obligations but followed that up with a massive outlay on new players. There were rumours about a late sale of Jhon Duran, although the club rejected late approaches for the Colombian.
Had they sold Duran, Emery would have had the funds to bring in a player like Chiesa. However, Emery rates Duran highly, and selling him would have depleted their striker options this season, although Chiesa is equally capable of leading the line if needed.
