Newcastle United will prioritise signing a right-sided attacker in January

Newcastle United will target a right-sided attacker when the transfer window re-opens in January after failing to land a suitable profile in the summer.

According to Football Insider, Newcastle United will prioritise a move for a right-sided attacker when the January window opens. Eddie Howe wanted a new winger in his ranks but failed to find the right solution despite a late bid for Nottingham Forest star Anthony Elanga.

Newcastle United will prioritise a right-winger

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe would have wanted a better transfer window than the one he had in the summer. The Magpies failed to land a few of their priority targets, while they were unable to offload the deadwood, meaning they enter the new season with a relatively similar squad to last season.

They failed to sign Marc Guehi as the defender chose to stay put on deadline day, as the Tyneside otfit had failed with four separate bids for the centre-back. Moreover, they had wanted a new right winger after managing to keep hold of their top stars like Anthony Gordon, Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimaraes.

A new right winger was considered a player of utmost priority as the club had plans to sell Miguel Almiron, with Fulham showing late interest in the Paraguayan. The Cottagers ruled out a late move, and the South American stayed put at the club, as Howe can still count on him.

The Magpies were also keen on Ferran Torres, as the Barcelona forward chose to stay where he was. Newcastle United will look to rectify their error when the January window opens, as Howe will prioritise a right-winger then. The club has a list of targets they could revisit after they failed to land them in the summer, which could open the doors for Almiron to depart then, albeit for a diminished value.

Anthony Elanga is still a target for Newcastle

Newcastle United saw a bid rejected by Nottingham Forest for Anthony Elanga, with reports stating they made a £50 million offer to sign the winger. They retain an interest in the attacker and could make their move when the January window opens.

They will have other targets on their list, as their response to the failure to sign a new player will be interesting. Elanga would be a good addition, but that may again come at the expense of another star leaving, which does seem like Almiron.
