Brazilian outfit Sao Paulo are closing in on the signature of the Newcastle United full-back Jamal Lewis.
According to a report from UOL, Jamal Lewis is all set to join Sao Paulo in the next few days. The Brazilian outfit have agreed on a deal with Newcastle United to sign the left-back and he is expected to travel to Sao Paulo today (Sunday) to complete his move.
Jamal Lewis’ time at Newcastle United
Lewis came up the ranks at Norwich and made a name for himself while playing for their first team before securing a move to the Magpies in the summer of 2020. Over the years, the 26-year-old has only featured in 36 matches for the Tyneside club’s first team.
He was surplus to requirements last season and they ended up sending him out on loan to Watford. The Northern Irish international featured in 38 matches for the English second-division outfit and even contributed towards two goals.
While he returned to his parent club for the 2024/25 season on the back of an impressive loan spell, Lewis is not a part of Eddie Howe’s plans moving ahead. With his contract running out in less than 12 months, the Magpies have been looking for a potential destination and São Paulo from Brazil have been working hard to sign the former Norwich star.
Sao Paulo sign Jamal Lewis?
Their managed Luis Zubeldía was keen on defensive reinforcement and the report suggests the Brazilian outfit have managed to strike a deal with Newcastle on Saturday afternoon to bring the 26-year-old to the club.
Given the kind of performances he had for Watford last season, Lewis will surely add a lot of quality to their squad. While he prefers playing on the left flank, he can even feature on the right which suggests he could be a great signing for Sao Paulo.
As per the report, the Brazilian club expected Lewis to travel to Sao Paulo early on Sunday in order to complete the final details of the move. If everything goes according to plan, there could be an official announcement of the transfer soon.
