Crystal Palace in talks over a new deal with Jean-Philippe Mateta

Crystal Palace are in talks with Jean-Philippe Mateta over a new deal, as Oliver Glasner wants to retain the French forward.

According to Caught Offside, Jean-Philippe Mateta is in line for a new deal at Crystal Palace, as Oliver Glasner wants to keep hold of the player. The 27-year-old is seen as the perfect fit for the Austrian’s plan, as the resurgent star showed what he could do last season with 19 goals in the Premier League.

Crystal Palace to renew Jean-Pjilippe Mateta’s deal?

Just over a year ago, Crystal Palace were desperate to sell Jean-Philippe Mateta, with the 27-year-old attracting some interest from his homeland France. For good or for worse, the striker stayed put at Selhurst Park, and would not have dreamed of the prospect where the club are eager to offer him a significant new deal.

From the club’s perspective, the decision to put him on the market in the summer of 2023, as well as the January window of 2024, made sense because he wasn’t performing. Mateta is playing in his fourth entire season this time around, and it was back in the 2020-21 season in the Bundesliga that he scored 7 league goals in a campaign, his highest for the next three and a half years.

In the three campaigns at Palace, he has barely scored five league goals, although that wholly changed since the arrival of Oliver Glasner. As the 27-year-old stared at ending another season in a subdued manner, the arrival of the Austrian saw the resurgent star hit 13 goals before the campaign came to a close.

Overall, he managed 19 goals across all competitions for Palace in that campaign, and since then, Glasner had made up his mind and that of the club to retain him. Mateta then went on to have a terrific time with his national team at the Olympics; Palace have now decided to give him a new deal, as talks are ongoing with the striker, that could see him become one of the essential earners at Selhurst Park.

Oliver Glasner key in renewal talks

Mateta makes £50,000-a-week on his current deal at Palace and has two years left. The club could have cashed-in on him this summer, with Aston Villa one of those keen. However, Glasner has indicated that he wants to keep the resurgent star for as long as possible, as he views the 27-year-old as a key cog in his system.

With the arrival of Eddie Nketiah from Arsenal and the departure of the misfiring Odsonne Edouard, Mateta and the former Gunners star can build a strong partnership up front to flourish. Palace found their form after a stuttering start to the new Premier League campaign as they fought hard to get a point against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
