Official: Scott McTominay joins Napoli from Manchester United

Scott McTominay completes Napoli switch from Manchester United

As confirmed by Napoli’s official X account, Scott McTominay has now joined the Italian giants, marking the end of his long tenure with Manchester United. The Scottish international travelled to Naples on Thursday to complete his medical, and the transfer was finalized just hours before the summer window closed. United will receive a fixed fee of £25m for McTominay, with a 10 percent sell-on clause included in the deal.

A Significant Transfer for United and McTominay

The sale of McTominay represents a notable financial transaction for Manchester United, contributing positively to the club’s Profit and Sustainability rules (PSR). The deal is categorized as ‘total profit’ for United, making it one of the most lucrative sales in the club’s history. McTominay’s transfer is tied as the fifth-highest sale United have ever made, alongside Daniel James’ move to Leeds United for £25 million, potentially rising to £30 million, in 2021.

West Ham United and Fulham submitted bids for McTominay earlier in this transfer window, all of which were turned down. However, it was Napoli who finally found a breakthrough in negotiations, securing the midfielder’s services for the upcoming season.

McTominay is coming off the best season of his career, having scored 10 goals across all competitions. His performances attracted the attention of Napoli, where he will now reunite with former United striker Romelu Lukaku and work under the management of Antonio Conte, who has a storied history with both Chelsea and Tottenham.

A New Chapter in Naples

McTominay’s arrival in Naples was met with enthusiasm from the passionate Napoli supporters, eager to see the Scottish midfielder in action. His departure from Manchester United, however, was met with mixed emotions by manager Erik ten Hag, who expressed his bittersweet feelings about seeing the academy graduate leave.

McTominay’s journey with Manchester United began when he was promoted to the first-team squad by Jose Mourinho in April 2017. He made his debut the following month in a match against Arsenal. Over the course of his time at Old Trafford, McTominay made 255 appearances for the club, scoring 39 goals. He signed three contract renewals during his tenure with the senior squad, with the most recent being a five-year deal in June 2020.

Scott McTominay’s transfer to Napoli marks the end of a significant chapter in his career and the beginning of a new one in Serie A. The move is a fresh opportunity to continue his development under the guidance of Antonio Conte in a competitive environment that might be more in turn with his strengths.
