Liverpool came close to signing Cesar Huerta this summer, could pursue signature in January

Liverpool could revisit the signing of Cesar Huerta in January after coming close to signing the Mexican attacking sensation this summer.

According to a report from Claro Sports, Liverpool were on the verge of completing the signing of Mexican winger Cesar Huerta from UNAM Pumas. But, the move fell through in the last stages. However, the Reds remain interested in his services and could revisit the deal in the winter transfer window.

Huerta made the move to Pumas in the summer of 2022 on a free transfer from Chivas. The Mexican international has since featured in 75 matches and he has contributed towards 28 goals (17 goals, 11 assists). He has started the new season in fine fashion with two goals in his five league outings.

With just 12 months left on his deal at the Mexican club, the 23-year-old was on the verge of joining Liverpool. The Reds have not been that active in the ongoing transfer window, but they have recently completed two major signings. Arne Slot’s team have signed Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia and Federico Chiesa from Juventus.

Liverpool’s move for Huerta collapses

While Chiesa has already joined his new club, Mamardashvili will continue at Valencia for another season before making the move to Anfield. Apart from the two blockbuster deals, the Merseyside club were on the verge of signing Cesar Huerta.

They feel the Mexican international has huge potential and were looking to sign him and send him out on loan to EFL Championship outfit Sunderland. But, the Black Cats have rejected the opportunity and for now, Liverpool’s move for Huerta has collapsed.

Liverpool could return for Cesar Huerta in the winter

With just 12 months left on his contract, Pumas were pushing for the move to take place. But, it has not gone according to plan. However, Liverpool retain their interest in the youngster, and the coming months could be key in deciding his future.

Cesar Huerta is expected to continue at the Mexican club with the intention of maintaining a high level of performance to ensure Liverpool remain keen on the winger’s services and return for him when the window re-opens in January.
