Arsenal reportedly considered a late move for 23-year-old Newcastle United mainstay Anthony Gordon, also a target for Liverpool.
According to a report by Daily Mail, Anthony Gordon is the subject of interest from Arsenal. The Newcastle United attacking mainstay has also been the target for Liverpool in the summer transfer window. However, the 23-year-old will not depart from St. James’ Park before Friday’s summer transfer deadline.
Anthony Gordon and his rise at Newcastle United
Anthony Gordon has established himself as one of the best young attackers in the Premier League in the last few seasons. The Merseyside native spent the first few years of his youth career with Liverpool before joining Everton in 2012. The Englishman spent over a decade with the Toffees and rose in prominence during his spell with them before joining Newcastle United in January 2023.
The Tyneside outfit coughed up a hefty sum to sign Gordon from Everton, and he has been worth every penny thus far. The 23-year-old has turned out 67 times thus far for Newcastle United while chipping in with 14 goals and 11 assists.
Anthony Gordon’s exploits have helped him break into his national side, and he was with England during UEFA Euro 2024. Meanwhile, the English attacker’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs across Europe. Arsenal and Liverpool were his prospective suitors in the summer transfer window.
A man in demand
Liverpool’s interest in Anthony Gordon is understandable. The Reds have even been ready to sell Luis Diaz to make room for the Newcastle United attacking mainstay. However, with a move for the Englishman not materialising, Liverpool signed Federico Chiesa instead, with the 26-year-old Italian international arriving from Juventus on Thursday.
As for Arsenal, the Gunners have expressed their interest in securing Anthony Gordon’s services in a late move this summer. Mikel Arteta wants two top-quality options for every position in his squad. Gordon thus emerged as a viable target for Arsenal, considering he can be an upgrade over Gabriel Martinelli on the left flank.
Newcastle United have been desperate to keep hold of Gordon beyond the summer transfer window. The Magpies have succeeded in that endeavour, with Arsenal’s emerging interest not turning the player’s head.
