Atletico Madrid, Barcelona vying for Danilo Pereira

Barcelona will reportedly compete with Atletico Madrid for the signature of 32-year-old PSG utility man Danilo Pereira in the final hours of the summer transfer window.

According to an update by reputed French journalist Fabrice Hawkins, Danilo Pereira is the subject of interest from Atletico Madrid and Barcelona. The two La Liga clubs are keen on bolstering their midfield units and backlines before the summer transfer window shuts down. So, the 32-year-old Paris Saint-Germain utility man has emerged as a target.

Danilo Pereira and his career so far

Danilo Pereira has been a dependable performer since joining Paris Saint-Germain from FC Porto. A native of Bissau, the African-born midfielder spent his formative years in Portugal, passing through the academies at three clubs and graduating from the youth division at SL Benfica.

However, the 32-year-old rose in prominence during his spell with FC Porto after struggling for stability before joining the Portuguese giants. PSG initially signed Danilo on a season-long loan deal in October 2020 before completing a permanent transfer in the 2021 summer transfer window.

The Portuguese international has turned out over 150 times thus far for PSG, chipping in with ten goals and three assists. However, Danilo Pereira’s long-term future at Parc des Princes is uncertain after entering the final 12 months of his contract. He has yet to feature for PSG this season, with the situation capturing the attention of Atletico Madrid and Barcelona.

La Liga move on the horizon?

Atletico Madrid’s interest in Danilo Pereira is understandable. The Colchoneros want to bolster their midfield unit before the summer transfer window shuts down, as Diego Simeone has only four options for the central berths. So, the PSG utility man has emerged as a viable target for Atletico Madrid, and he can also be an option for the central defensive positions.

As for Barcelona, the Catalan giants are keen on signing a centre-back and a holding midfielder before Friday’s summer transfer window deadline. The Catalan giants have lost Ronald Araujo and Andreas Christensen from the central midfield unit, while Marc Bernal recently sustained a long-term knee injury. So, several centre-backs, including Jonathan Tah, have emerged on Barcelona’s radar.

Midfielders like N’Golo Kante also feature on Barcelona’s wishlist. However, Danilo can be a one-stop solution for the Blaugrana. Meanwhile, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid will face stiff competition from FC Porto for the 32-year-old PSG utility man. It will be interesting to see where the Portuguese international lands in the coming hours.
