Newcastle United are close to finding an agreement with Crystal Palace for £70 million-rated centre-back and top target Marc Guehi.
According to Daily Mail, Newcastle United and Crystal Palace could be close to reaching an agreement for Marc Guehi. The Magpies have considered the defender their No.1 target for this summer window, as a £70 million move is being spoken about in reports.
Newcastle United closing in on Marc Guehi
The Marc Guehi saga could drag on for a few more days as Newcastle United remain in talks with Crystal Palace. The Euro 2024 finalist has been Eddie Howe’s top target as he wants a top-draw central defender to shore up the backline amid severe injuries to two of his players there.
The Magpies saw four bids rejected by Crystal Palace, who have held out for a fee in excess of £70 million for their star defender. Guehi’s stock rose after his prominent role with England at the Euro, helping them reach the final, and as things stand, he could become a permanent fixture in place of Harry Maguire.
Newcastle United briefly considered alternatives such as Edmond Tapsoba, as well as Trevoh Chalobah and Joe Gomez, although it appears they only want Guehi. Palace have stood firm in their demand for the £70 million-rated Euro 2024 finalist, which the Magpies are now considering paying.
Newcastle United are now closing in on signing the defender, as talks between the two clubs could reach a positive conclusion. The Magpies’ last offer was around £60 million plus £5 million in add-ons, as they are expected to improve that and bring the final number to £70 million.
Guehi to decide on move ahead of deadline day
With the two clubs liukelty to reach an agreement for the defender, a decision will be for Guehi to make ahead of the transfer deadline day. Since Newcastle United made their interest known, the 24-year-old has indicated he would be open to a move, although the lack of an agreement so far between the clubs may make him think about leaving Palace.
The big reason would be to leave his current side weaker, especially if they cannot find a replacement in time. Arsenal’s Jakub Kiwior is considered a target, but the Gunners have reportedly decided to keep him, although that stance could still change. If Crystal Palace can find a suitable replacement, Guehi will choose to leave and join the Magpies.
