Liverpool ponder stealing a march on Juventus for Teun Koopmeiners

Liverpool are considering a late punt for Atalanta star Teun Koopmeiners despite Juventus interest

Liverpool are still in the market to bolster their midfield, even after missing out on Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi. The Merseyside club has now turned its attention towards Atalanta’s midfield maestro, Teun Koopmeiners, as they look to add quality to their ranks before the transfer window closes. While Juventus currently lead the race to secure the Dutch international, Liverpool have not given up hope of orchestrating a last-minute move for the highly-rated 26-year-old.

Koopmeiners has been a standout performer for Atalanta, contributing 29 goals in 129 appearances and playing a pivotal role in their successful Europa League campaign last season, which saw them overcome Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool on their way to lifting the trophy. The Dutchman’s versatility, combined with his ability to contribute both defensively and offensively, has made him a prime target for several top European clubs this summer.

Juventus Leading the Chase, But Liverpool Lurking

Juventus have emerged as the frontrunners in the pursuit of Koopmeiners, with TEAMTalk suggesting that the player has already agreed personal terms with the Turin giants. The former AZ Alkmaar star is said to be keen on a move to Juventus, having expressed his preference for the Italian club on multiple occasions. Despite this, Liverpool remain in the picture and are exploring the possibility of hijacking the deal.

Liverpool’s interest in Koopmeiners is not new, and it has been rekindled after the Reds missed out on other midfield targets. According to sources, Liverpool have recently requested updated information on Koopmeiners’ situation, signalling their continued interest in the player. The club’s manager, Arne Slot, who previously coached Koopmeiners at AZ Alkmaar, is a known admirer and views him as an ideal reinforcement for Liverpool’s midfield.

Financial Complications Could Give Liverpool an Opening

While Juventus appear to be in pole position, financial complications could play a significant role in determining Koopmeiners’ destination. Atalanta, who value the midfielder at €60 million (£50.8 million), are reluctant to sell to a direct Serie A rival. Moreover, Juventus are reportedly looking to spread the payment of the transfer fee over several years, a proposition that Atalanta is opposed to. The Bergamo-based club would prefer to receive a substantial portion of the fee upfront, which could give Liverpool an advantage in negotiations.

Atalanta’s preference to sell abroad rather than strengthening a domestic competitor might also work in Liverpool’s favour. If the Reds are willing to meet Atalanta’s financial demands more directly, they could potentially leapfrog Juventus in the race to sign Koopmeiners.

While Juventus may be the preferred choice for the player, the complexities surrounding the financial aspects of the deal leave the door slightly ajar for Liverpool to make a late swoop. With the club’s midfield in need of reinforcements and Klopp keen to add depth and quality, the coming days will be crucial in determining whether Liverpool can pull off a surprise move for the Dutch international.
