Atalanta eyeing Kieran Trippier move, Newcastle United must lower asking price

Atalanta have set sights on a move for Kieran Trippier, who might be ready to leave Newcastle United in this window.

According to The Times, Newcastle United could ponder a timely exit for Kieran Trippier, with Atalanta keen on signing the wide man. The Serie A side will only pursue a move if the Magpies reduce their asking price for the 33-year-old in the final year of his deal at St. James’ Park.

Kieran Trippier on Atalanta’s radar

Atalanta have had a busy summer so far, with at least nine new players on a permanent transfer or a loan move. Among those was former Torino right-back Raoul Bellanova, who will be seen as Gian Piero Gasperini’s first-choice player in that position.

They also have Brandon Soppy coming at the back of underwhelming loan spells, first at Torino and then at Schalke. Atalanta will likely look to sell the 22-year-old, as they have now set sights on Newcastle United’s experienced wide-man Kieran Trippier.

Newcastle United are reported open to selling Trippier, provided that is the player’s desire, and from recent reports the right-back might prefer an exit. The England international was the subject of considerable interest from Bayern Munich as recently as January. But the Bavarians are no longer likely to come into the equation.

West Ham were keen before they signed Aaron Wan-Bissaka, meaning should Kieran Trippier decide to leave he might have options like Galatasaray and Atalanta. The latter are willing to explore the possibility of signing him if Newcastle United reduces their asking price, which currently reflects more on the player’s stature than his actual market price, depending on his current contractual situation.

Trippier’s Newcastle United future uncertain

There’s uncertainty at Newcastle United regarding Trippier’s immediate future. With the club still manoeuvring through PSR obligation, the hierarchy might welcome a sale at this stage when his contract expires in 2025 rather than leaning towards keeping him.

Secondly, Trippier did not start last weekend against Southampton, with Valentino Livramento increasingly likely to have usurped his starting spot since the end of last season. Should Eddie Howe insist that Trippier will have a limited role, the experienced wide-man will likely pack his bags, and among his current suitors, Atalanta seems like the best option to further his playing career.
