Liverpool offered bumper wages to Martin Zubimendi

Liverpool’s triple your-wages offer has been turned down by Real Sociedad midfield mainstay Martin Zubimendi.

According to Mundo Deportivo via Paisley Gates, Liverpool submitted a massive offer to lure Martin Zubimendi to the club as they look to reinforce their midfield. Despite their efforts and a bumper offer, the Spanish international has turned down the opportunity to play for the Reds and looks all set to stay at the club.

Zubimendi has been a consistent performer for Sociedad over the years and his work hasn’t gone unnoticed. He was one of their standout players last season and surely made a big impact at Euro 2024 with Spain. Despite having three years left on his deal, his future has been a talking point since the start of the window.

Quite a few top clubs have been linked with the 25-year-old defensive midfielder with Liverpool being one of them. The Reds want to bring in a new defensive midfielder to further strengthen their team. While Wataru Endo has done a decent job, he was a stop-gap signing and Arne Slot is looking for a more dependable figure.

The Merseyside club had identified Zubimendi as their priority target for the role and they have been working on a potential deal for some time. They waited until the end of the Euros to make a move. But, it seems their efforts haven’t really worked out as the player has rejected a lucrative offer from their end.

Liverpool’s bumper offer for Zubimendi doesn’t work

The Reds are ready to triple his wages but he still wants to continue at Sociedad. The Spanish midfielder is currently on €3 million per season and Liverpool are ready to increase it to €9 million ( just under £150,000 a week) which would have seen him become the fifth highest-paid player in the squad.

While the Merseyside club were ready to trigger his €60 million release clause, it no longer matters as the player has turned down the opportunity to play for them. Given how serious Liverpool have been about their pursuit, people close to Sociedad had their doubts about the future of Zubimendi but he seems to have decided to continue in his childhood.
