Ferran Torres has dealt a blow to Newcastle United’s prospects of securing his services as he does not want to leave Barcelona this summer.
According to a report by Spanish outlet MARCA, Ferran Torres is the subject of interest from Newcastle United. The Magpies are keen on bolstering their wide-attacking options before the summer transfer window shuts down. However, the Spain international has handed a blow to the Tyneside club’s prospects as he does not want to leave Barcelona anytime soon.
Ferran Torres at FC Barcelona: The story so far
Ferran Torres has struggled to stamp his authority since joining Barcelona from Manchester City in a deal worth €65 million in January 2022. While the Spaniard enjoyed a solid second half of the 2021/22 season, he has not justified the investment that the Blaugrana made to land him two and a half years ago.
The 24-year-old has been a backup player for Barcelona for much of his stint with the club, with Lamine Yamal and Raphinha ahead of him in the pecking order. However, Torres has a decent record in his outings, managing 25 goals and 13 assists in over 6,000 minutes of game time in 114 appearances thus far for Barcelona.
However, the versatile Spanish attacker faces an uncertain future at the Catalan club heading into the final days of the summer transfer window. With Barcelona eager to balance the books, Torres is expendable. Meanwhile, the player’s situation has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several well-known clubs across Europe, including Newcastle United.
Premier League return on the horizon?
Newcastle United’s interest in Ferran Torres is understandable. Recent reports have claimed that the Magpies are ready to submit an attractive offer to tempt Barcelona to sell the former Manchester City forward.
However, a summer move to St. James’ Park will not see the light of day due to the player’s desire to remain with Barcelona beyond the summer transfer window. In addition, the Spaniard does not want to join Newcastle United in the coming weeks.
So, Newcastle United must set their sights elsewhere to bolster the attack, with Torres not arriving from Barcelona in the coming days. The Magpies remain keen on signing a wide attacker, although time is running out for them to reinforce their offensive department.
