Newcastle United revive move for James Trafford

Newcastle United have reignited their interest in England youth international James Trafford, with Burnley demanding around £30 million to part ways with him.

According to a report by TEAMtalk, James Trafford remains the subject of interest from Newcastle United. The Magpies are keen on signing a goalkeeper before the summer transfer window shuts down. So, they have set their sights again on the England youth international, with Burnley demanding around £30 million to part ways with him.

The James Trafford tale

James Trafford would not have envisaged a frustrating debut Premier League season after joining Burnley from Manchester City last summer. The Englishman’s stock had soared after an impressive 2022/23 campaign on loan at Bolton Wanderers. He followed that up with solid displays in his nation’s triumphant journey at the Under-21 European Championships.

The 21-year-old has turned out 29 times thus far for Burnley while conceding a whopping 63 goals and keeping only two clean sheets. Trafford lost his spot as the first-choice goalkeeper for the Clarets towards the end of last season but has started the new campaign between the sticks.

Meanwhile, despite a frustrating debut season with Burnley, James Trafford’s stock in the market remains high. Widespread reports have linked the England youth international with several well-known clubs in the Premier League, including former side Manchester City. However, his likeliest destination would be Newcastle United.

Premier League return on the horizon?

Newcastle United have viewed James Trafford as their top target for the summer transfer window. While Eddie Howe has Nick Pope in his squad, he wants a goalkeeper who is proficient with the ball at his feet. The English shot-stopper has thus emerged as a viable candidate to bolster the Newcastle United squad.

However, while personal terms are not an issue for Trafford or Newcastle United, the trail had gone cold in the last few weeks. The Magpies have resurrected their interest in the Englishman, although it is unclear if they are ready to meet Burnley’s asking price of £30 million.

James Trafford’s potential justifies an asking price of £30 million. However, it will be interesting to see if Newcastle United will cough up the required sum or look to bring the valuation down if they approach Burnley for talks.
