Djed Spence expected to stay at Tottenham amid exit links

Tottenham Hotspur defender Djed Spence has been linked with a move away from the North London club in recent weeks.

Djed Spence was on loan at Genoa during the second half of the 2023/24 season after a failed loan spell at Leeds United in the first half of the campaign. The Englishman was expected to leave the North London club permanently this summer, having been linked with an exit since January.

However, a report from Football Insider has claimed that Tottenham have now made an U-turn on his future. They are prepared to give the 24-year-old full-back another opportunity at the club.

Spence arrived with high expectations after impressing in the EFL Championship, and he was expected to develop into an important first-team player for the North London club. He failed to make his mark initially. But an impressive loan spell at Genoa and a fruitful pre-season seems to have handed him a lifeline at Tottenham.

Ange Postecoglou is ready to give him another opportunity, especially after the departure of Emerson Royal. The Brazilian has joined AC Milan, and he will need to be replaced adequately. Pedro Porro is set to be the first-choice right-back at the club, with Spence pushing him for the starting spot.

It will be interesting to see if the 24-year-old can establish himself as an important first-team player for Tottenham in the upcoming campaign. Recent reports linked him with a return to Genoa before the Serie A outfit cooled their interest.

Djed Spence could be a useful option

The English wide player is highly rated across the country, and there is no doubt that he has the talent and potential to prove his worth at Tottenham. Spurs paid around £20 million to sign the defender, and they would not have been able to recoup that kind of money for him this summer. It would be ideal for them to keep faith in the player and let him develop further.

If he can impress in the upcoming campaign, Tottenham might be able to sell him for a profit in the near future. The 24-year-old is capable of operating as a full-back on either flank, and having a reliable defender like him would allow Spurs him to rotate key players like Porro.

The North London club will compete in European football next season, and they need a deeper squad. Postecoglou will need to rotate his players to keep the squad fresh and he needs more options at his disposal. Spence is likely to get ample game time in all competitions, and it remains to be seen whether the 24-year-old can make the most of the opportunity.
