Liverpool inch closer to landing Martin Zubimendi

Liverpool are growing in confidence about singing Martin Zubimendi despite some complications in the background regarding the midfielder.

According to Merseyside outlet Paisely Gates, Liverpool could be closer than ever to signing Martin Zubimendi despite the many complications emerging in the background recently. The midfielder is yet to make a definitive decision on his future, with Real Sociedad expecting him to join the English side.

Liverpool confident about Martin Zubimendi

Liverpool are insistent on signing a new midfielder or two before the window shuts, as Arne Slot wants the defensive midfield role covered for the new campaign. Martin Zubimendi emerged as a critical target for the Merseysiders, and they are willing to pay the £51.5 million-rated release clause.

Real Sociedad are not willing to accept anything less, although there’s still an open chance for the deal to be structured. Liverpool have already secured permission to speak with Zubimendi directly in an attempt to accelerate their chances of signing him soon.

However, there are some doubts brewing in the background. Zubimendi has come across as a loyal player to his boyhood club and has shown some reluctance in the past to move out. While Sociedad expects him to join them, they are also trying to keep him and hand him a new lucrative contract that will make him one of their highest-paid stars.

Liverpool, on the other hand, are growing confident about signing the £51.5 million-rated midfielder. As the Merseysiders want to wrap up the deal as soon as possible, further talks to finalise the agreement could take place in the coming period.

Liverpool could target a second midfielder

Zubimendi is a much-needed player for Arne Slot to advance in his plans. They did not sign a big-name No.6 last season despite significant attempts to bring Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia. Still, they ended up with Wataru Endo, who did an excellent job during the season. While Zubimendi seems like an upgrade on the Japanese international, Liverpool is also angling a move for another midfielder, as per the report.

They had links to Adrien Rabiot, but at that time, the Frenchman was seen as an alternative to Zubimendi. According to the report, Arne Slot wants both midfielders, and they could even negotiate a free transfer after his departure from Juventus.
