Arne Slot’s Liverpool are leading the race for the services of Atalanta attacking midfielder Teun Koopmeiners.
Liverpool are yet to make a signing this summer but they seem to have put their foot on the accelerator in recent days. They are looking to reinforce their midfield before the end of the transfer window and according to La Gazzetta Dello Sport via Paisley Gates, the Merseyside club are leading the race for the services of Teun Koopmeiners.
The Reds feel they need quality in the centre of the park and Martin Zubimendi is their primary target for the role. While they are working on a deal to sign the defensive midfielder from Real Sociedad, Liverpool are considering making another addition to the midfield, they seek a more attacking option and have their eyes on Atalanta’s Koopmeiners.
The Dutch international was on fire for the Italian club last season. He was involved in 51 matches and ended up contributing towards 22 goals (15 goals, 7 assists). He played a big part in their Europa League triumph and his performances had put him on the radar of Liverpool.
The Reds have been linked with him throughout the summer but Juventus were favourites for his signature. However, the report suggests the Old Lady are not looking to spend more than €50 million for the 27-year-old. With Atalanta not interested in letting him leave for anything less than €60 million, the Italian giants are unlikely to succeed in their pursuit.
Liverpool frontrunners in Koopmeiners’ pursuit
Meanwhile, Liverpool have retained their interest in the Dutch international’s services and are believed to be in pole position to sign him before the transfer window shuts. Koopmeiners has talked about the fact that he has offers from the Premier League and Liverpool could be one of the clubs looking to steal the march.
Koopmeiners’a ability in the final third could make the Reds a lot more threatening going forward. Apart from his creativity and his goal-scoring abilities, his versatility could give Arne Slot quite a few tactical options. Recent reports have suggested Liverpool are preparing to table an offer for his services and it will be interesting to see how close to the asking price do they go.
