Fabrizio Romano comments on Virgil van Dijk exit links at Liverpool

Fabrizio Romano has commented on the rumour mill linking Virgil van Dijk with a departure from Liverpool in the summer transfer window.

According to an update by Fabrizio Romano on Caught Offside, there is no news surrounding Virgil van Dijk. Recent reports have linked the Liverpool captain with a move away from the Merseyside club. However, the situation surrounding the veteran Dutch defender is “very quiet”, with the Reds counting on him for the upcoming season.

“There is no news at all on Virgil van Dijk, despite some stories at various points this summer. It’s currently very quiet as Liverpool are counting on van Dijk and there are no significant updates so far. In my opinion, he should stay and continue as he’s a key player for Liverpool and new manager Arne Slot will need him and the quality and experience he brings.”

Virgil van Dijk and his transformational effect on Liverpool

Virgil van Dijk has been one of the best defenders in the world since joining Liverpool from Southampton in January 2018. The Merseyside outfit chased the Dutchman for over six months before finally securing his services six and a half years ago.

The 33-year-old immediately transformed Liverpool’s backline, with the club becoming title contenders on all fronts. The Dutch centre-back, who has made 74 appearances for the Netherlands, has turned out over 250 times thus far for Liverpool while chipping in with 23 goals and 12 assists.

Can van Dijk leave Liverpool?

Recent reports have claimed that Virgil van Dijk faces an uncertain future at Anfield, with the big-spending Saudi Pro League giants keen on securing his services in the summer transfer window. Meanwhile, the Reds are keeping their options open, with the latest updates pointing to the club identifying Gleison Bremer as the ideal successor.

However, Liverpool would prefer to keep hold of the 33-year-old Dutchman, and they are confident of tying him to a new contract. The Merseyside outfit must step up quickly, considering van Dijk has entered the final 12 months of his contract at Anfield.

With Fabrizio Romano claiming there is nothing surrounding the 74-cap Netherlands international right now, a summer departure is not on the cards, with Liverpool likely to keep hold of him beyond the summer transfer window.
