Barcelona will reportedly compete with Real Madrid for 25-year-old Liverpool mainstay Trent Alexander-Arnold, with the two clubs targeting a 2025 summer move.
According to a report by Spanish outlet AS, Trent Alexander-Arnold is the subject of interest from Real Madrid. The reigning La Liga champions have been mulling over signing the Liverpool defensive mainstay for a long time. However, Los Blancos will face stiff competition from fellow Spanish top-flight club Barcelona for the 25-year-old full-back.
The Trent Alexander-Arnold story
Trent Alexander-Arnold has established himself as one of the best full-backs in the world since breaking into the first-team squad at Liverpool FC. The Englishman has been with Merseyside club’s senior side for nearly a decade and has gone from strength to strength since making his bow many years ago.
The 25-year-old has won nearly every major trophy with Liverpool while contributing to the club’s success in recent years. Alexander-Arnold has turned out over 300 times thus far for the Merseyside outfit while chipping in with 19 goals and 81 assists.
However, Alexander-Arnold faces an uncertain future at Anfield after entering the final 12 months of his contract with Liverpool. The Reds are desperate to keep hold of the 29-cap England international, who they view as the long-term club captain. However, the player is gaining popularity in the market, with Barcelona and Real Madrid vying for his signature.
Can Barcelona beat Real Madrid to Alexander-Arnold’s signature?
Barcelona’s interest in Trent Alexander-Arnold is understandable. The Catalan giants remain in the market for the long-sought, long-term solution for the problematic right-back berth. While Joao Cancelo is Barcelona’s top target, they are struggling to raise the funds to land the Portugal international. So, Alexander-Arnold is a viable alternative, especially for a Bosman move next year.
As for Real Madrid, the reigning La Liga champions are also interested in securing Trent Alexander-Arnold’s services in a Bosman move in the 2025 summer transfer window. They have already asked the 25-year-old to snub a new contract offer from Liverpool.
Trent Alexander-Arnold’s contract situation puts Liverpool in a spot of bother. It will be interesting to see if the Reds fend off the threat from Barcelona and Real Madrid to keep hold of the 29-cap England international in the long run.
