Newcastle United fail with second bid to sign Marc Guehi

Newcastle United’s second bid worth over £50 million to sign Crystal Palace defensive star Marc Guehi has been turned down.

According to a report from HITC, Newcastle United’s improved offer of over £50 million for the services of Marc Guehi has been rejected by Crystal Palace. The Magpies are keen on reinforcing their backline, and they have been pushing hard to sign the English international but have not succeeded yet.

Things might not have worked out for Guehi at Chelsea. But the move to Crystal Palace in the summer of 2021 has helped him make a name for himself in the Premier League. Not only has he established himself in their first team, but his consistent performances helped him play an important part in England’s run at Euro 2024.

His recent performances have not gone unnoticed, and he finds himself on the wishlist of multiple top clubs from across Europe. With just two years left on his deal at Crystal Palace, clubs are looking to prise him away. Newcastle United are one of the clubs keen on signing the 24-year-old.

Newcastle must break their transfer record for Guehi

The Magpies have made Marc Guehi their priority target for the summer and have been working towards a potential signing for some time. With Jamaal Lascelles and Sven Botman out injured, Eddie Howe seeks more quality at the back and he considers Guehi the best fit for their project.

After their initial bid for the Chelsea graduate was turned down by the Eagles, the Magpies returned with an improved offer of over £50 million. But, even their second bid has been rejected as Crystal Palace want at least £65 million for his services.

The Magpies will have to break their transfer record of £60 million paid to sign Alexander Isak and Sandro Tonali to complete the signing of Guehi. Crystal Palace’s stance is quite clear and it is unlikely to change.

While the player is open to a move to Newcastle United, he is not going to force his way out. As a result, the ball is now in the Tyneside club’s court. With Paul Mitchell pushing for the move, it will be interesting to see if they do meet the Eagles’ demands. Meanwhile, Palace have started looking for alternatives as they want to be prepared for the worst possible situation.
