AC Milan reach full agreement to sign Emerson Royal

AC Milan and Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly reached an agreement regarding a €15 million move for Emerson Royal.

AC Milan have secured the services of Emerson Royal from Tottenham Hotspur, with a deal valued at over €15 million now finalised. This marks the Serie A club’s third significant signing of the summer, as the club continues to strengthen its squad ahead of the 2024/25 season.

The agreement between Milan and Emerson was reached back in May, with the Brazilian defender showing a clear preference for the Rossoneri despite receiving offers from four or five other clubs. According to Fabrizio Romano via X, preparations are now underway for Emerson to travel to Milan, where he will undergo a medical and integrate into Paulo Fonseca’s squad as quickly as possible.

A lengthy pursuit

The pursuit of Emerson by AC Milan has been a lengthy process, with initial links with the player emerging as far back as May. Negotiations between the Italian club and Tottenham took time to finalise, but both sides have now agreed on the terms of the transfer.

The total package exceeds €15 million, and Emerson has reportedly been eager to join Milan, rejecting multiple offers from other clubs. The 25-year-old right-back will bring a different set of skills to the Milan squad, which was a key factor in Fonseca’s decision to push for his signing.

The Brazilian’s transfer to Milan is particularly significant given the club’s current restrictions on non-EU player signings. Following the addition of Strahinja Pavlovic, Emerson becomes the second non-EU player registered by Milan in this transfer window, meaning the club will be unable to sign another player in the same category according to Serie A regulations.

A solid addition but comes with risk

The Brazilian right-back will be signing a five-year contract with Milan, worth approximately €3 million net per season, along with performance-related bonuses. Tottenham initially set Emerson’s price at €20 million, but after weeks of negotiations, the clubs settled on a fee slightly lower than the original asking price.

Emerson’s arrival at San Siro is expected to bolster Milan’s defensive options and provide Fonseca with a versatile right-back who can offer something different from the current squad members. As the deal reaches its final stages, Milan fans can look forward to seeing Emerson donning the Rossoneri jersey in the upcoming season.
