Newcastle United are close to signing Marc Guehi in a massive deal from Crystal Palace, with Liverpool not expected to chase the defender.
According to The Daily Telegraph, Newcastle are inching closer to signing Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace, with a deal close to being finalised. The Magpies are expected to pay well in excess of £60 million for the 24-year-old Euro 2024 finalist, as Liverpool are not expected to make a late entry.
Newcastle United to sign Marc Guehi
Newcastle United are prioritising a new defender and is about to sign an established England international in the form of Marc Guehi. The Magpies initiated discussions with Crystal Palace for the defender and are now close to sealing a move in excess of £60 million for the 24-year-old centre-back.
Eddie Howe had wanted a top-draw presence at the back following the injuries to Sven Botman and Jamal Lascelles. They have landed Lloyd Kelly on a free transfer earlier in the window and are now close to finalising terms with Crystal Palace for Guehi.
The signing of Guehi will be seen as a statement signing, with the 24-year-old keen on joining Newcastle United if the two clubs can agree on terms. The Palace star has been one of the most improved English defenders over the last two or three years since his move from Chelsea.
He has also established himself as a firm England international, and his performances at the European Championships prove that argument. Either way, Newcastle United are expected to finalise terms for the centre-back and will hope there are no late hiccups in their pursuit, as neither the fee nor personal terms are a problem at this stage.
Liverpool move ruled out
Newcastle United are the clear front-runners for Guehi, although reports stated that Liverpool had a late interest in the defender. Arne Slot wants a new centre-back in this window, and the Merseysiders have held an interest in the 24-year-old for some time now, although they are not expected to move for the defender.
Football Insider claims that Liverpool were priced out of any potential deal, with the club not prepared to meet Crystal Palace’s demands for Guehi. While the Merseysiders are believed to have the cash, they might be reserving it for another big statement signing, with Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon heavily linked with a move. However, they have not yet moved for the left-sided forward.
