Everton, Fulham eyeing Joel Matip swoop

Everton and Fulham are reportedly eyeing a summer deal for former Liverpool cult hero Joel Matip.

Everton and Fulham are among the clubs showing significant interest in Joel Matip, the former Liverpool defender who left Anfield at the end of last season. The 32-year-old centre-back, who was a key part of Jurgen Klopp’s successful era at Liverpool, is currently a free agent.

Matip joined Liverpool in 2016 as a free agent and played a pivotal role in their triumphs, winning every major trophy available. Despite his impressive performances, injuries limited his appearances, and he ended his Liverpool career with 201 games, 11 goals, and six assists.

According to Caught Offside, Everton, Fulham, and Bayer Leverkusen are all vying for Matip’s signature. Representatives of the player have already met with all three clubs, providing them with the necessary information about his situation.

The Merseyside divide

The prospect of Matip joining Everton is particularly intriguing given his recent history with Liverpool. Everton’s move for Matip hinges on the potential departures of Michael Keane and Mason Holgate. Additionally, the future of Jarrad Branthwaite remains uncertain, leaving manager Sean Dyche keen to ensure he has adequate defensive cover.

Everton’s interest in Matip highlights their intent to bolster their defensive options. Should they secure his services, it would add experience and leadership to their backline, potentially strengthening their squad for the upcoming season.

Fulham is also keen on Matip, especially with the possibility of Tim Ream leaving Craven Cottage before the transfer window closes. Matip’s wealth of experience and leadership qualities make him an ideal replacement for the 36-year-old Ream. Fulham hope that Matip can fill any potential void in their defence and help maintain their Premier League status.

A return to Germany?

Bayer Leverkusen, under the guidance of coach Xabi Alonso, are eyeing the signing of Matip. The Bundesliga champions are reportedly the most serious contender for his signature and hope to finalise the deal soon. With the season fast approaching, Leverkusen are eager to secure Matip’s experience and defensive prowess to bolster their squad.

For Matip, a move to Goodison Park could offer a chance to remain in the Premier League and bring his experience to a team in transition. But it will come at the cost of his legacy in Red.

Fulham’s potential need for a seasoned defender makes Matip an excellent fit, while Bayer Leverkusen’s determined pursuit underlines his value on the European stage. Wherever he lands, Matip’s experience and leadership will undoubtedly be an asset.
