West Ham United are eyeing a Bosman move for former Barcelona skipper Sergi Roberto before the start of the new season.
According to a report from Football Insider, West Ham United are keen on further reinforcing their squad before the end of the transfer deadline. They are looking to make a move for former Barcelona star Sergi Roberto who is a free agent and is on the lookout for a new club.
Roberto came up the ranks at La Masia before getting promoted to the Spanish giants’ first team in the summer of 2013. He was a part of their first team for around 11 years and featured in over 370 matches for them.
While he surely had a lot of success at his childhood club winning every major trophy, the Spanish international had been reduced to a squad player in recent seasons. The 32-year-old midfielder could still have been of great use to the Catalan giants.
But, their financial struggles and the need to keep their wage bill in check have resulted in Roberto’s departure. They decided against extending his stay and he has left the club following the expiry of his contract.
West Ham United keen on signing Sergi Roberto
With the midfield star available for free, there are quite a few top clubs who have been linked with them. West Ham United are one of the clubs keen on signing Roberto before the end of the transfer window.
People at the London club value his experience and his ability to feature in the midfield as well as a right-back. They feel his arrival will boost their squad’s morale and give Julen Lopetegui more tactical options.
Since the 32-year-old is available for free, the Hammers are looking to make a move for him. Their recruitment team consider this to be a bargain deal given what Roberto can offer to their squad.
While the Hammers have identified the Spanish international as a potential target, they haven’t made a move yet and it will be interesting to see if they do make one. West Ham could face competition from rival English clubs as quite a few of them have been offered the chance to sign him.
