Newcastle United wish to sell Callum Wilson in this window, although they might only achieve their target with a reduced asking price.
According to Football Insider, Newcastle United are keen on offloading 32-year-old striker Callum Wilson in this window. The Magpies have found it difficult to find the right suitors for the forward and may have to reduce their asking price to have a chance of selling him this summer.
Newcastle United’s Callum Wilson conundrum
Newcastle United are keen to balance their act financially, as their ability to sell unwanted stars may further fuel its budget for signings. Considering PSR concerns before the June 30 deadline, the Magpies had hoped to sell some of their fringe stars including Callum Wilson. Still, they cashed in on homegrown stars like Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh to fulfil their financial obligations.
They are still eager to find solutions for a few of their experienced stars, with the club ready to sell Kieran Trippier and Wilson. For the latter, they had set a £15 million asking price earlier in the window but barely found any buyer. West Ham United were interested earlier in July but have since switched their interest and signed Niclas Fullkrug from Borussia Dortmund.
West Ham’s huge transfer fee for the 31-year-old German striker indicates they might have paid Wilson’s asking price if not for several factors. The 32-year-old’s persistent injury issues and the fact that he is into the final year of his deal at Newcastle United would have seen some sides, including the Hammers, want to pay a lower fee.
Newcastle United have already reached an agreement with Sheffield United for William Osula, who will be considered a direct replacement for Wilson. They are paying a £15 million fee, including add-ons, meaning they are still hoping to recoup that money through the sale of Wilson.
Newcastle United must reduce the asking price
Newcastle United had hoped to justify Wilson’s exemplary record in scoring goals and being a ready-made Premier League-level striker by asking for around £15 million or more. However, their inability to attract any serious suitor for the experienced forward might force them to reduce the asking rate.
With a year left on his deal, this might be Newcastle United’s last opportunity to get a decent fee for Callum Wilson. However, they will have to reduce the price drastically to get something in this market, or they risk losing the injury-prone star on a free transfer next summer.
