Former Real Betis midfield star Guido Rodriguez is all set to join West Ham United as a free agent ahead of the 2024/25 season.
According to Fabrizio Romano, West Ham United have an agreement in place to sign former Real Betis star Guido Rodriguez. The Argentine World Cup winner has been a free agent since leaving the Spanish club at the end of last season, and the Hammers have managed to convince him about a move to London. He is all set to undergo his medical today before signing the contract.
Rodriguez was a part of the Betis setup for over four years. He joined them at the start of 2020 and featured in over 170 matches for the club. The 30-year-old defensive midfielder was an important part of their first-team squad.
While injuries did trouble him last season, as he could only feature in 29 matches, Rodriguez still has quite a few years left in him. And ever since he parted ways with Betis, quite a few top clubs have been pushing to sign the free agent.
Barcelona, who are in desperate need of bringing in a new defensive midfielder, had a verbal agreement in place with the Argentine international. But, things did not work out and the deal collapsed back in June. It gave other clubs an opportunity and West Ham United seem to have made the most out of that situation.
West Ham United agree deal with Rodriguez
The Hammers want to bring in a new defensive midfielder after deciding against signing Kalvin Phillips, who was on loan at the club for the second half of last season. Julen Lopetegui wants more competition for a place in the starting XI, and he feels the former Betis star could do wonders for them.
They have managed to agree on terms with the 30-year-old, who is all set to undergo his medical as a new West Ham signing. The Hammers have booked a medical for today following which he will put pen to paper. He was a consistent performer for Real Betis over the years, and the London club will hope for something similar from Rodriguez when he takes the field for them.
