Premier League heavyweights Arsenal are reportedly in the pole position to sign 26-year-old Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres, a target for Liverpool.
According to a report by TEAMtalk, Viktor Gyokeres is the subject of interest from Arsenal. The Sporting CP striker is also a target for Liverpool heading into the final month of the summer transfer window. However, the Gunners are in the pole position to sign the 26-year-old, whose release clause is worth €100 million.
The rapid rise of Viktor Gyokeres
Viktor Gyokeres has blossomed into a prolific striker since joining Sporting CP from Coventry City last summer. The Swede was already a promising attacker during his spell with the EFL Championship club but never scored goals for fun during his spell with the Sky Blues.
The 26-year-old equalled his tally for Coventry City in his debut season with Sporting CP, scoring 43 goals and providing 17 assists in 50 appearances thus far for the Portuguese giants. Meanwhile, Gyokeres’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs across Europe.
Widespread reports have linked the Swedish international with Premier League bigwigs like Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, and Tottenham Hotspur. So, a return to the Premier League might be on the cards, although Viktor Gyokeres’s release clause of €100 million poses a problem for his suitors.
England return on the horizon?
Arsenal’s interest in Viktor Gyokeres is understandable. The Gunners have been scouring the market for a striker heading into the summer transfer window due to the inconsistencies of Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah. So, Gyokeres has emerged as a viable target for Arsenal, with the report claiming they are the front-runners to secure his services.
Liverpool recently considered hijacking the North London club’s move for Gyokeres. However, the move will unlikely see the light of day, with the report pointing to the Gunners being in the pole position to sign the 26-year-old Swedish striker. In addition, coughing up €100 million made things complicated for Liverpool.
With Arsenal leading the race to secure Viktor Gyokeres’s services, it will be interesting to see if they can beat the competition to his signature. Sporting CP will likely demand close to €100 million to part ways with the Swede in the summer transfer window.
